Pirates 3 - a critique

so im on my way driving to buy the tickets for the show (i wanted to be guaranteed a seat) and im wondering what the movie will be like. still in my memory are the 3 way sword fight on the moving wheel and the whole love triangle b/w jack-will-elizabeth, and the million directions that it could go. i wasnt nervous, the team of bruckheimer and verbinski had hit two homers in the past so why should this one be any different? after viewing it, im going to say, it was indeed a homer. not a grand slam, but definitely a pretty kickass homer that made the crowd cheer.

to start out with, the special effects were absolutely phenomenal. blew the second movie rite outta the water. i cant even begin to imagine how they filmed the people swinging on ropes, twisting around the dueling ships jumping from ship to the other. probably a bit of patience, a bit of technology, and a lot of cursing when one person screwed up and thus ruined the scene lol. if this movie were rated on special effects and comp technology alone, it would get a 6 outta 5

the actors overall did a good job, but there were certainly some stand-outs. johnny depp has got the character of jack sparrow down to a t. hes a lovable clown one moment and a deadly swordsman the next. u know he means business and yet hes awesome. hes jack frickin sparrow! chow yun fat did a great job playing Sao Feng. he was a deadly fighter who was cunning and brilliant. keith richards did a surprisngly good job playin sparrow's father. i mean, he only had a few lines, but i enjoyed those, and i think he played the part well. the shrunken head was pretty sweet as well. orlando bloom did a good job. good. not great but still it worked for the movie and his depth of will certainly added depth to the movie. i was a tad disappointed by keira knightley's performance. shes a very talented actress and has a lot of potential, but the only part where i was stirred by her performance was her speech towards the event motivating the priates. and on that note....

PLOT SPOILERS BELOW!!! PLEASE BEWARE!!!! scroll down past the second warning for my overall opinion and bottom line on whether or not u shuld see the movie.

the plot. hehe. everyone complained that it was really hard to follow and all that crap. i dont know, i had little trouble with it. you just gotta think as yer watching it. keep askin yerself "what motivates him?" "what does he want most?" "why is he on that side?" and the movie makes perfect sense.

lets start with the most uhh volatile? part of the plot. the romance. that was a bit too much for me. last time i checked im not a female, but im sure even females got a bit fed up with it. at one point or another, elizabeth seemed to have feelings (at least thats what it appeared) for will, jack, and james! that got a bit annoying. i'll admit that my prediction was for will to die and for jack and elizabeth to get together. i dunno, i just thought they'd make a great couple.

that marriage while fighting pirates ordeal was pretty sweet although i do amit that i liked the elizabeth using girl power to kill davy jones' goons more than the whole "i do" part.

the movie went really in-depth into elizabeth swann, and she was definitely the main character of this movie. i mean, u have the whole jack-barbossa rivalry for captain of the black pearl and beckett-jones alliance, but really most of the action centered around elizabeth who soon became king of the bretheren. (a girl behind me said "shes the queen not the king!") and that made me crack up.

the ending was circular. barbossa is the captain of the black pearl. jack is in the dinghy. BUT! jack holds the map to the fountain of youth con ponce de leon en la florida. los indios tienen el agua de vida. just wanted to throw in a bit of spanish ;) i loved the swordfight tween jack and davy jones, and will taking command of the flying dutchman was a nice touch. he saved his father and got to sail the seas. he carved out his heart and gave it to elizabeth.

the series wrapped up nicely and i think it should stay that way. but disney wants money so it just might make a fourth one involving the fountain of youth. but i really hope not. leave it as it is!

PLOT SPOILERS END HERE!!!!

soooo

overalll

i will give pirates iii: at world's end 4.5 stars outta 5. the acting was good. the effects were amazing. the ending was ok i guess. i just expected differently. it was a good story even though i think they couldve cut a few things out and made a few scenes shorter. but overall, it was worth the ticket price and i recommend this movie to all pirates fans. but if yer a non-pirates fan, u mite find this movie long and confusing.

frida

i hinted at this in my previous posting, but i feel that the movie "Frida" that we watched in spanish a few days ago deserves more than just a meager mentioning in a previous post. so here is my critique of the movie.

salma hayek's range as an actress is incredible. she was able to capture the agony of frida's accident but also capture her hope for the future. her strength and determination shone through. u could see it on her face. she portrayed frida kahlo as a tortured human being who was trying to get from day to day in her life.

when i came into this frida kahlo unit i figured she was sum boring old artist. her husband probably cheated on her (a common thread of artists we studied this year) and maybe she did sum important shit. thats it.

i had no idea how much pain this woman went through in her life. her husband, diego rivera, never treated her right, and she deserved better. he was her fellow artist, companion, best friend, fuck buddy, but he was NEVER her husband even though they were married for 25 years. he told her in the beginning that he wasnt going to be faithful, and she accepted this, but you saw throughout the film how he slept with every woman he could get his hands on. literally.

she loved him very much, and the thing is that he loved her very much as well. he had a problem. he seriously was a sex addict who couldnt control himself. frida was unable to have children because of the trolley accident earlier in her life and that pained her greatly. she dearly wanted children, but that too was taken from her.

she sunk into alcohol and smoking and other ways to forget about life for a while. frida deteoriated until finally her suffering ended. diego died soon after. it was a life of suffering and emotional/physical pain.

frida and diego were communists and they had LEON TROTSKY and his wife in their home for a while. i still cant get over that. trotsky in frida's house. small world aint it? and its hard to believe that she had an affair with him, nvm he was like 30 years older than her. but still. having the archenemy of josef stalin in yer house takes guts.

the music was pretty sweet. i dont think i'll get that opening theme song outta my head for a while, and the songs were well selected. the director took quite a few artistic liberties and such but i think they worked out very well.

i loved the movie overall and i think that it was very well done. the acting talents of salma hayek really enhanced the show, and it was a great viewing experience. three thumbs up :)

lifes a game

i finally figured it out. lifes a game. its kinda like monopoly. there are no winners, only losers who realized that theyve spent over 3 hours of their life playing for fake money. its kinda like where u gotta do whatever it takes to win, but yer never on. a friend and i were joking last summer that you're never on top in life. theres always sum1 above u in the chain of command. teacher-student, boss-employee, then theres the grave and people are literally on top of you lol.

blehh that kinda reflects my mood rite now which is kinda weird cuz i had a great day today. i took my very first AP exam and i think that it went very well. the m-choice ranged from very easy to moderately difficult AKA jason narrowed it down to 3/5 and hadta guess from there. the essays were fairly easy, and johnny b said u just gotta nail 3/4 and do reasonably well on the m choice and u can get a 5 so thats what im hoping and praying for.

i made a pretty awesome diving catch in softball today in gym. everyone was cheering and clapping which was kinda nice. gives the old self-esteem a boost outta the gutter for a whole 2 seconds :) i batted 3/3 cuz i got lucky. good thing no one on the opposing team was skilled at snagging pop-ups.

we're watchin roger and me in econ tmrw and wednesday which i am looking forward to. yes, ive seen it before. yes i know michael moore is a "big fat stupid white man" but i enjoy his narration. hes a funny guy and his beliefs are even funnier. i love liberals. they taste like chicken. they go down good with green peace members and WWF members.

outsourcing is such a tricky issue. i mean, i do support it. im a firm believer in capitalism and i hate socialism in all of its forms. i dont believe that a company has any obligation to its employees, but its tough to say that after u watch "roger and me" just seein how the whole town went to hell once GM closed its factory doors. very tough. im lookin forward to the rabbit scene tho lol.

while on the topic of school movies, i am enjoying "frida" in spanish class. my teacher fast forwards through the nudity, but i got the dvd (cuz i wasnt in class today cuz of my ap exam) and watched it full through. its not like u could see anything. it was all dark. shes just paranoid.

well, i take that back, the lesbian sex scene in paris did show a good deal of flesh, but not much and for a short period of time. crazy bisexuals. frida kahlo. lol. altho i feel really bad for her. they loved each other in a hating sort of way. they were best friends but never husband and wife. she had such a difficult life and suffered so much.

altho i find it hilarious that she had an affair with LEON TROTSKY!!!!! the fuckin 70 year old geezer from the USSR that stalin kicked out. mind u she was like 30ish at the time.

so yeah this posting has gotten way off topic from what i previously intended. i'll vent out my rages against life and society in a later post. maybe later this week.

PS i hate when adults try to use vocabulary that they dont understand. in the employee newsletter at my work (library) i found out that my big boss (library director) is "writing a blog." u cannot write a blog unless u mean you are doing the HTML coding and writing one in computer script from scratch. she means that she has "created" a blog and is writing "posts" in it. yes. im a stickler for correct usage of the word "blog.'
